It is known that low caloric diets help humans live longer and improve their stem cells.

However, during the last decade, numerous sources have claimed that fasting is actually the best way to enhance your stem cells and biohack your body.

What Are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are cells within the body that have not differentiated or become specific types of cells.

They can travel around the body, seek damage and inflammation, and replace older cells, causing a regenerative effect on the tissue. Stem cells can be found in several locations throughout the body, including bone marrow, fat tissue, and even teeth.

As we get older, so does our stem cells, therefore their production decreases as we age. However, studies claim that regardless of age, it is possible to enhance your stem cell’s production and quality through fasting.

Fasting Improves Stem Cells Regeneration 

Prolonged fasting has been found to boost cellular regeneration when done for longer periods of time. 

A 2014 study found that prolonged fasting between 48–120 hours can activate pathways that enhance cellular resistance to toxins and stress in mice and humans. The study also found that fasting may also be linked to increased immune system regulation.

Fasting Increases Stem Cells Production 

Recent studies implemented by MIT concluded that stem cells increase their rate of regeneration drastically after long periods of time.  

More specifically, stem cells extracted after the fasting period and cultured showed a double in their regenerative capacity, meaning the stem cells could proliferate into higher numbers with greater efficiency. 

Interestingly, these results were obtained after a period of only 24 hours of fasting

Nutrition & Stem Cells

Nutrition is key when it comes to improving your stem cell conditions. Since inflammation is the major cause of disease, fighting it is key to boost stem cells. The reason for this can be traced back to the fact that stem cells fight inflammation in your body, so if you are constantly consuming foods that increase it (sugar, alcohol, trans fats, vegetable oils, refined carbs, processed meat, etc.) your stem cells can become “distracted” fighting that instead of “attending” other issues in your body.

Anti-inflammatory antioxidants are a great way to decrease cellular inflammation. Increasing your intake of ECGC (found in green tea), Curcumin (found in turmeric), and Sulforaphane (found in broccoli) is vital in helping stem cell’s activation.

Recent studies have shown that stem cells show an activation increase of up to 25% when given these compounds.

Fasting For Beginners

Now that you know all the benefits of fasting, we are sure that you would like to implement it. If you feel like fasting for a total of 48-120 hours is too much for you, we got your back.

Studies have found that intermittent fasting can become an attainable option for those that are just getting started.

There are several methods to implement intermittent fasting (all of them effective), however, we recommend you to get medical advice before jumping into any of them.****

-The 16/8 method involves daily fasts of 16 hours for men and 14-15 hours for women. On each day, you restrict your eating to an 8-10 hour “eating window” where you can fit in 2-3 or more meals.

-The 5:2 diet, or the Fast diet, involves eating 500-600 calories for two days of the week but eating normally the other 5 days.

-Alternate-day fasting means fasting every other day, either by not eating anything or only eating a few hundred calories.
